A Sort of Road Map to Developing Your Own Ethical Code

I’ve been struggling for a while to put together a code of ethics that I can live by as an Irish Traditional Polytheist.  I started by looking for books on Pagan Ethics and realized that there were very few and none with information on what I had in mind.  Most of the books I read were just the authors’ personal thoughts on the subject.

At the suggestion of a friend of mine I decided to look at ethics in the philosophical sense first, as the original pagans (ancient philosophers) had written about ethics.  Imagine my surprise with what I found.

I decided after the initial search to start there and move down through the ages to look at ethics and how they changed and what they originally meant and what they mean now.

I have a road map now.  Study ancient philosophy, and then move down through to medieval philosophy, and then to modern philosophy defining ethics, morals, happiness, vices and virtue in each time period.  After I do that, I can then sit down and actually put to words my own code of ethics based on what I have learned.  I will be sharing what I have learned with you all, and I hope you will follow along with me to form your own code of ethics as pagans.  It is a large project and I hope you will join me through it with your own thoughts.

I’m not an expert on them but I was wondering if you have looked at the Brehon Laws, and if so are they playing a role in your code of ethics? Just curious.

That would be a yes. I will be using them as well as some other texts to help me put together my code of ethics, but that will be that last step on my road map. :)
